Wow - what a week of catskiing we have had. 150 cms in 7 days and 100 in 24 hours last Saturday. All super dry, Champagne Powder. One of the single biggest days on record. The phrase 'almost too deep" was heard a few times... This season is certainly stacking up to be another stellar snow year. Ullar the snowgod has been looking upon us favorably. We are booked solid until mid March, but have a few openings March 14-18, March 20-22 and the last week of March.

After a month of what seems like constant snow, the skies have cleared and the alpine bowls beckon. Our mountain team did some heli bombing last week and we were able to open all our alpine ski terrain. Our high snowcat drops are at about 7,800 feet and are simply spectacular. What a great time of year!

White Room Episodes TV Show goes Catskiing

Last winter the White Room Episodes TV show visited Island Lake Catskiing for some powder and good times. The TV show based in Hawaii does both surf and ski/snowboard shows through the year. The boys really enjoyed all that Island Lake has to offer and were treated to some powder shredding, great food and our version of 'Lodge Life".

Sherpas Cinema win more awards!

Sherpas Cinema and their movie ALL.I.CAN continue to clean up awards around the world. They have recently won top honours at the snow industries biggest event - The Powder Video Awards. ALL.I.CAN won movie of the year and best cinematography. Kye Petersen won best natural air and JP Auclair won best POV - both from segments in ALL.I.CAN.

The Sherpas have already won Best Movie at a number of other festivals including: The Banff Mountain Film Festival and X-Dance.

A large part of ALL.I.CAN was filmed on location at Island Lake Catskiing and Mica Heliskiing. The Sherpas also filmed a 23 minute TV show called The Balance of Powder for the 2 operations.

Snowcat assisted ski touring announced by Island Lake Catskiing

Island Lake Lodge, long heralded as a prime backcountry lodge and catskiing destination, will now be offering guided ski touring as well. Guests will be transported by snow cat into the mountains where they can enjoy touring 7,000 acres of Island Lake property. The terrain, which includes alpine bowls, gladed trees and an extensive road network, is ideal for both catskiing and ski touring. “We have always known our property is great for touring and are very excited to offer the opportunity to a wider audience,” said guiding manager Niki LePage. Multi-day stays will include all food and accommodation. Island Lake will offer packages for all levels of skiers from beginner to expert. Ski touring will be available as single day trips or as two, three or four day tours starting in April. Each day starts with a snowcat-ride into the ski terrain to get as much elevation as possible.

Island Lake Catskiing is located in the Lizard Range of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, 10 kms from Fernie B.C. Island Lake offered ski touring in the mid 80’s and for the past 24 years has been providing catskiing experiences for skiers and snowboarders.

What an unreal storm. We have had 150 cms or 5 feet of pow in 48 hours. The temps have stayed pretty cold, so the snow is very low density. You could call it Champagne Powder! We are currently in a lull between storms, but there is more snow on the way!! Powder skiing in BC does not get any better then this.

This is getting RIDEEPULOUS!!!!!
We have had over 50 cms in 24 hours and its still puking with no signs of slowing down. Its has been staying cold at around -15, so the snow quality is over the head blower pow!! Our guides are saying 'it does not get better"! There are seats left for the upcoming tour.

What a week! We have had 40 cms over the last 3 days and 65 cms this week. The snow is expected to continue for the next 4-5 days. With temperatures staying cool at -10 the snow is super dry champagne powder!

Environment Canada has issued a heavy snowfall waring for the Elk Vally and Fernie area. It is currently puking outside and we are expecting 3-4 days of snowfall. Add this to the 30 cms we had this past week and we are in great shape at Island Lake Catskiing.

Hey kids, it has indeed been snowing up here at Island Lake Catskiing! We had over 20 cms last night and about 35 cms in the last 48 hours. The forecast is for another few storms to hit us over the next 4-5 days. It should be a very deep beginning to the new year!

Yesterday, Dec 3rd we ran the first cat of the season. The terrain was more filled in then usual for this time of year and the snow was smooth like butter! Gladding Catski Terrain and Runs

The latest news from the side hill. So since our last report there has been a few new catski terrain projects completed.

We spent almost 20 days in the Woody area, this has been our biggest project yet this year. We started by widening the road to hopefully gain access to this zone earlier in the season. Then we started in on the Little Woody line proper, which consisted of smaller gladded tubes. Gone now are the tubes which should allow for at least 2-3 more passes by catski groups. While we were in the Woody zone we decided to attack the last remaining ungladded line in the Big Woody, SWEET!
Then we realized that the ski season was just around the corner and decided it was time to work on our conditioning and we headed for the long walk to the 3 Bears area. We only spent a week there for a little fine tuning. This zone had not been visited since the Monashee Tree expedition of (circa) 2001.
With the weather deteriorating we have now started working closer to the lodge area.
The Enchanted Forest line off of Baldy West is were we are working now. Clusters of large standing dead trees are being removed for your storm skiing pleasure. Hopefully the weather cooperates and we get a few more runs cut. All this new work will make our catskiing terrain better then ever.

Island Lake Catskiing Announces Special Christmas Family Tours and Ladies Only Tours.

Fernie, BC Canada October 19^th 2011 – Island Lake Catskiing has announced a few special tours for the 2011 – 2012 ski season. Family Christmas tours will take place between December 24^th - 28^th and will include an extra guide in the cat, turkey dinner and a festive, decked out lodge. Children under the age of 18 will receive 10% off the tour price.

Ladies Only catski tours will take place March 11^th - 14^th and March 27^th - 29^th. The tours will have all female guides and cat drivers. The guides will provide powder skiing tips. Ladies will also receive a complimentary treatment in our luxurious full spa.

What is catskiing?

We often get asked - what is cat skiing? While skiers in Western North America seem to be familiar with the concept, folks from out East and especially other parts of the worlds are not. To catski we use a large tracked machine (cat) that is usually used to groom slopes at resorts. We then put an enclosed box with comfortable seats on the back. This enables us to drive up mountains and access fresh powder and great terrain. Our Cats at Island Lake Catskiing are some of the most comfortable in the industry. Heated, hot drinks, food, sound system and plenty of room make a great ski or snowboard experience.

What a great summer it has been. Though we started with a cool wet spring, July, August and September have been sunny and hot. The wild flower displays were exceptional, the hiking trails were in great shape and we had some awesome weddings at the lodge. Al in all a superb summer.

Glader’s Report

The Glading crew is back in action this summer up on the sidehill at Island Lake Catskiing. We’re down a man reducing our crew to only two while Corrie recovers from knee surgery. Big Steve and Ryan have been out battling to make the world a better place to ski one tree at a time. So far the boys have faced dense bush in the ‘Secret Sorefoot’, thunderstorms and bugs on ‘The Nose’, and are currently moving their way up, blowing out the ‘Little Woody’. Future endeavors include the long trip into ‘The Bears’ and more work in the ‘Geisha’. All in all it’s going to make for more amazing Island Lake powder skiing. Stay tuned for more updates…

Another great Fernie hike at Island Lake Lodge

Wow - we went up Big White Peak a couple days ago and it was truly spectacular. Wildflowers, mountain goats, eagles and panoramic views. Big White is one of the more challenging hikes at Island Lake near Fernie BC and a guide is highly recommended. It takes about 6 hours roundtrip and has an elevation gain of 2,800 feet. Rail Trail

The Rail Trail will host a section of the Trans Rockies bike race Tuesday August 9^th! Beautiful sights and sounds next to Lizard Creek with good views of the “Three Bears” peaks half way up the trail. Grass trimming along the trail has recently been completed.

Old Growth Trail

Beat the heat! Shady old growth cedars, and lush interior rainforest plants make this trail a local favorite. Stay bear aware. Some black bear families have been enjoying the old growth forest this summer.

Lake Trail

The forest around the lake is looking lush and vibrant. Devil’s Club and Cow Parsnip are reaching new heights, but it looks like the thimbleberries and huckleberries are a couple weeks away yet. A momma moose with two newborn calves have been hanging out around the lake. Give them a wide birth and keep pets on a leash.

Fir Trail

Big cedar, towering larch, and majestic Douglas fir trees make this trail worth a visit. Check out the viewpoint looking up Hunter’s Bowl and plan your ski lines for a catskiing adventure with Island Lake next winter!

Tamarack Trail

Wildflowers at all the viewpoints promise to put a smile on your face! Paint brush, penstemon, columbine, anemone and scorpion weed to name just a few. If you make it up to the Five Star summit to “Aiden’s Bench”, you will be rewarded with views towards Heiko’s Trail and the Three Sisters as well as the Island Lake property.

Baldy Loop

Check out the views over the backside of Baldy Mountain while you are at ridge top. Descending west Baldy provides great vistas of “the Wolverine”, a steep rocky bowl in the Lizard Range. Spineback Trail

If you are observant, you will see many horn coral fossils on display in the limestone of the Spineback trail, especially two thirds of the way up. Ski & snowboard movie filming - Mica Heliskiing

Our last movie shoot of the ski season happened at the the end of March at our sister operation Mica Heliskiing. The Sherpas rented a ciniflex camera and we headed up to Mica Heliskiing. The lineup included Rory Bushfield, Callum Pettit, Kye Petersen, JP Auclair, snowboarder Adam Chuntz and Lynsey Dyer. The team got some great shots on the ciniflex and a great time was had by all. You will be able to see the footage in the Sherpas movie ALL.I.CAN and Mica Heli & Island Lake Catskiings movie - The Balance of Powder. Both will be coming out in Sept, 2011. Special Conditions Note:

We are experiencing a colder than usual spring/summer after a winter with a sizable snowpack. Many hiking trails still have many snow patches and some trails are covered. Check in regularly for the most up to date conditions. Hire a guide to find the best trails and avoid getting lost. Learn about local history and the area’s flora and fauna along the way.

Rail Trail

Major obstructions have been cleared by the trail crew, some wet spots remain. Beautiful conditions next to Lizard Creek with good views of the “Three Bears” peaks half way up the trail.

Old Growth Trail

Clear of major obstructions; early season trail crew work is ongoing. Keep your eyes open for spring beauty and calypso orchids along the journey. Stay bear aware. Some black bear families have been enjoying the old growth forest this spring.

A couple of snow patches remain in the shady wooded areas. The cow parsnip are starting their seasonal growth spurts and the Indian hellebore look lush and vibrant. A momma moose with two newborn calves have been hanging out around the lake. Give them a wide birth and keep pets on a leash.

Fir Trail

A great trail on a hot day! Big cedar, towering larch, and majestic Douglas fir trees make this trail worth a look. Please be informed that the NE corner of the trail is still under snow and finding the trail can be difficult if new to the area. There is also a small footbridge that has been damaged by the winter snowpack. Please use caution until it is repaired.

Tamarack Trail

A section of blue flagging tape has been added section of trail just before the first viewpoint to help you find the way through a snowy patch. Please note that the railing on the Tamarack viewpoint staircase has been damaged by the winter snowpack. Use extra caution until it is repaired. Check out what how much our resident bears LOVE our benches if you stop at the first lookout J The trail is unchecked beyond the first viewpoint at this time, variable conditions to be expected.

Baldy Loop

You should be able to hike up North Baldy to the ridge top now as the snow is melting quickly. If you want to continue on to do the entire loop, the trail will be difficult to find because of snow. Consider coming back down the way you came unless you are certain of where the trail goes. One could also hike up from the lodge via West Baldy side of the loop. Again the top middle section of the trail may be obscured by snow. Look for trees peeled down to the sapwood by some black bears on this trail. Keep your eyes open for the resident marten as well.

Island Lake Catskiing ends a fantastic snow season

Sad but true - the best ski season in recent memory has come to an end. We have had a remarkable amount of powder snow this winter and our guests have been amazed. We are ending the season with a 6 metre (20 foot) base in the alpine. The snow continued to fall right up until early April - we actually had a metre of powder fall in the last week alone!! Incredible skiing right until the end.

We now have a waiting list for many tours. You probably want to book for next year as soon as possible.

Island Lake Catskiing has been having an amazing snow year. Well- I did not think this season could get any better, but we are currently in the middle of a huge snow storm. In the last 3 day we have had 80 cms of light, dry champagne powder. It looks like the snow will continue for at least the next few days as well. Our base at 2000 metres elevation is over 400 cms now. Wow is right. Keep it coming Ullar. Down here at Island Lake Catskiing have had about 50 cms of the good ol powder snow in the last 3 days. This on top of a consolidated base of about 350 cms means super good conditions!! I am looking out my office window (someone has to work in the office) and it is currently snowing about 3 cms an hour. The Fernie effect is on!!!
You probably need to go catskiing in BC one of these days...

It really has been an unbelievable couple of weeks here in Fernie BC. Up at Island Lake Catskiing we had over a metre (3.3 feet) of dry powder snow last week and it is still snowing heavily. The forecast is calling for another 50 cms before the weekend...wow. This light low-density snow is of course the best type. Over the head blower pow as the kids say. You should probably get down here soon...

More Sherpa Catski Filming

Well - seven days of filming with Sherpas Cinema has come to an end. During the week-long shoot we had 94 cms of snowfall...wow! Though it made for some great turns, that much snow did limit the terrain we could go into. Hence we spent a lot of time in the trees. Good thing Island Lake Catskiing has a ton of perfectly gladed trees. The Sherpas worked their magic on the much anticipated wire cam line. Though logistically challenging in every way, the wire produced some stunning imagery. Some of the highlights were Kye Petersen boosting some tech tricks of a roadside jump, Matty "the crazy Acadian" Richards unique sense of humor and endless enthusiasm, Callum Pettits 21st birthday... Eric Hjorleifson with a big air off the stump on Stump Fluff and big Ian McIntosh busting through powder poppers.

The boys from Sherpa Cinema are here at Island Lake Catskiing on a week long film shoot for their up coming movie All.I.Can. The skiers include Callum Pettit, Ian Macintosh, Kye Petersen, Matty Richard and Eric Hjorleifson. The first couple of days have been snowy indeed. We have been trying to get some group shots, which is no easy task with 5 fast pro skiers. We also have a cable cam set up and the fist test run when well yesterday. Holy Cold Smoke!! Well - the last couple days have been pure blizzard. In town we have had about 45cms over 2 days - the resort is reporting 50 cms. Island Lake Catskiing - Gladding update 2010

With another successful ILL gladding season at a close, we bring you an update. The crew of Corrie Wright, Steve Klopezig and Ryan Merrill, have manicured more than 350 acres of prime ILL fall line terrain, creating even more skiable habitat. Work was done on a variety of aspects and areas, giving us more skiing options on any given ski day. The Geisha South area formally known as “Lost in the trees”, now hosts many spectacular new lines of gladded trees. Skiing out of runs like Benches and Roller Coaster will never be the same. On the other side of Geisha Bowl, Valentines has some fine new open country, built for speed. Moving over to Face Shot Right, which used to resemble more of an over crowded Christmas tree farm, now boasts perfectly spaced trees. A significant effort was put into the backside of Lizard Pass a powder paradise with a lot more flow. Big Woody, off the West side of Baldly West has always been a favorite for its ubber good, consist - 35 degree fall line pitch. It now features classic ILL lanes and glades, I think this is going to make some people very happy. Imagine it with Powder! Sunny side on Baldy has seen a whole lot of improvements, and the Swiss Ridge Spooky zone is going to be frightfully good. Last but not least Mt. Fernie, all the front side runs have had an over hall and the back side Teli Fun is a couple of groups wider. Its like Agusta back there! As per usual the crew spent there days working on the side hill motivated by thoughts of catskiing down these soon to be powder filled glades with some very happy people.

Ski movie setup with Sherpas

The Sherpas have just spent 3 days setting up shots and starting a few time lapses. Dave Mossop was climbing around like a chimp getting hardware and rigging placed in some big trees. The boys also did a quick fly fishing shoot on Island Lake itself, which is full of cutthroat trout. We are all amped for the snow to fall and to get catskiing. The plan for filming is for the boys to visit Mica Heli Skiing in late December, then to Fernie and Island Lake Catskiing in January. There will also be a late season ski shoot at both heli and cat operations. Here are a few photos that the Sherpas took from the past week's setup.

The Rocky Mountain Sherpas whom are filming a new progressive movie for Island Lake Catsking and Mica Heli Skiing have been up at Island Lake all this week. They have set up a couple wire cams for winter shoots and have been doing some timelapse filming. Wow Looks like we are in for a great winter...La Nina is a coming!!!

"In the case of the cold La Niña event-- the opposite of the warm El Niño event-- the coastal waters off British Columbia tend to be cool. In a La Niña winter, the Canadian air temperature tends to be below normal, while the precipitation in southern Canada tends to be above normal. Winter and Skiing/Snowboarding are on the way

We woke up this morning to the 3rd day of heavy rain here in Fernie B.C.. Usually that would be gloomy, but the fact is there is heavy snowfall up in the mountains. Non-skiers may not agree, but we are happily thinking of powder skiing. Keep it coming Ullar (snow god).
